Do Teens Really Not Use Twitter?

There has been a lot of discussion recently about whether or not teens are using Twitter. In a recent article, the New York Times shares some interesting statistics about teen’s usage of the popular micro-blogging platform as well as other social media sites. The New York Times sites that just 11% of Twitter’s users fall into the teen category.

 

While 11% is indeed a small make-up of the Twitter population, when compared to teen usage of other online networks its in perfect line with typical trends. Teens make up only 14% and 9% of MySpace and Facebook user base respectively.

For all of you "New Media Experts"

I hope that I do not fall into this category. I mean I DO hate things, but mainly the things I hate are created by people that I consider new media douchebags. In my eyes, you are a new media douchebag if:

1) You're sole reason for being on social networks is to whore yourself out.

2) You are a self proclaimed "expert", "maven", or "guru".

3) You get pissed off when you didn't win a Shorty Award

4) Hiding behind a million different personalities on social networks

Those are just three things that struck me. There are plenty more, but I don't want to offend.

I do apologize if I have offended anyone - actually no I don't. If you are offended, it means you're guilty and I think you are ruining the "social" aspect of social media for everyone!

Back to Basics: A Social Media Primer

A new survey put out by the CMO Council has shed some new light on how brands are utilizing social media as part of their marketing mix. Most shockingly, the survey found that only 16% of brands routinely monitor what is being said about them online. Furthermore, 59% don’t compensate anyone based on customer loyalty scores and only 30% feel confident in their company’s ability to deal with customer complaints. 

We here at MGH WOM are firm believers in starting from the bottom up. It’s never too late to jump into the social media game, but if you aren’t already playing you may have a bit of catching up to do. Here are a few ways to get (back) on the right track.
